Covenant

of

Ensley Baptist Church

Covenant

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and on profession of faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.

We purpose therefore, by aid of the Holy Spirit: to walk together in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness and compassion. To promote its spirituality, to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines,  and to give faithfully of time and talent in its activities; to contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel throughout all nations.

We also agree: to maintain family and personal devotions, to religiously educate our children, to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to live carefully in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our commitments, and exemplary in our conduct; and be diligent in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.

We agree as the Holy Spirit leads us personally, to willingly abstain from all practices and substances which are detrimental to the moral, spiritual, and physical well-being of ourselves, our church fellowship, and our witness to the community.

We further purpose to keep the unity of Christ’s Church by, watching over one another in brotherly love, to remember each other in prayer, to aid one another in sickness and distress, to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech, to be slow to take offense, to always be ready for reconciliation, and to seek it without delay as the Savior instructs in Matthew 18: 15-17. We will submit to the leadership of this church in matters of discipline when the church has to act in order to defend the testimony of Jesus Christ.

We moreover purpose that, when we move from this place, we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and principles of God’s Word.
